Are you ready for the Mobile Web?
January 31, 2012 § Leave a Comment
According to the International Telecommunication Union, there are 5.3 billion mobile phone users worldwide. Of those, nearly half a billion are accessing the mobile web – with this figure expected to double by 2015. Even more compelling, 25% of the mobile web users in the US don’t use their desktop PCs to access the Internet anymore. It’s no wonder that many experts agree that the mobile web will one day overtake the desktop web, especially when you consider mobile phones currently outnumber PCs 5:2.
Mobilizing your web efforts opens up a myriad of issues and challenges that are unique to this relatively new medium. In10sity can help your team navigate this uncharted territory as we have for many of our other mobile clients. From mobile apps to text messaging, we can help.
Developing and Executing Your Mobile Web Strategy
An effective web strategy, in an ideal world, has mobile built into all of your projects from the ground up. Unfortunately, we live in a world where we have dozens of legacy sites on various platforms that require a certain level of retrofitting. Never fear, because either way, In10sity has the tools and know-how to make it work.
When planning a successful mobile strategy, there are three parts we consider for our clients:
- Audience
Identifying your various constituencies is nothing new. For example, a hospital’s audiences can include patients, families of patients, doctors, and administrators to name a few. Rather than focus on their roles, we want to focus on their behaviors. Using Google’s Behavior Groups, we will segment your audiences into “Repetitive now,” “Bored now,” and “Urgent now.” By focusing on audience behaviors rather than roles, we can custom tailor key content in ways that make the mobile experience useful. - Content
An effective content strategy relies on restraint. While on the desktop web you can deliver reams of content with complex menu systems, the mobile web demands brevity and utility. Mobile users are less likely to care about the “Letter from the President” and much more likely to appreciate phone numbers, addresses, pre-registration forms, etc. On the mobile web, less truly is more. - Platform
The question isn’t, “Should we develop a native app or a mobile website” but rather, “How do we develop for both now and ensure they work on future devices?” The answer lies in a “create once, publish everywhere” philosophy. With In10sity Healthcare’s inPower Content Management System, this philosophy is built in and can easily power mobile websites, iPhone apps, iPad apps, and Android apps.
